Amalgam used for dental fillings is a combination of mercury, tin and other metals. Though American Dental Association has confirmed that the amount of mercury released from amalgam fillings over its lifetime is too less to be harmful, people are more health conscious and turning towards removal of amalgam fillings and replacing the same with composite or other types of fillings. The removal of amalgam fillings requires utmost care to ensure that patients do not swallow small pieces of the filling or inhale the vapor of mercury during the course.
