Covid- 19 and Oral Hygiene

No other topic is on everyone’s minds as much as the Covid-19 virus, also known as the Coronavirus. As dental professionals, we are strictly adhering to the CDC guidelines for dentists to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and we are still open for emergencies only.

We also advise everyone to keep an eye on the current symptoms as directed by the CDC and use social distancing and hand washing to keep yourself safe. It’s also important not to slack off on your dental hygiene!

The health of your teeth and mouth can affect the health of your entire body. The idea that the health of your mouth is connected to the health of your entire body is called holistic dentistry. In fact, a healthier mouth can prevent heart attacks and diabetes; as well as boost your immune system to lessen the chances of colds, HIV/AIDS, and yes, viruses such as Covid-19.

Most ailments show their first warning signs in the mouth. This is because the mouth provides some of the best defense against these ailments. Your saliva has antibodies to attack bacteria from colds and viruses, which is what boosts your immune system to keep you healthier. But these antibodies are only successful when you clean your mouth properly by brushing your teeth, flossing, tending your gums, and using mouthwash. The Mayo clinic has good guidelines to accomplish these:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled brush using fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily.
  • Use mouthwash to remove food particles left after brushing and flossing.
  • Eat a healthy diet and limit food with added sugars.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if bristles are splayed or worn.
  • Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings.
  • Avoid tobacco use.

So don’t forget to take care of your mouth/teeth as part of staying safe against Covid-19. Healthy teeth and mouths can help protect you from Covid-19 and other major ailments and illnesses.

Take care of your teeth and mouth, as they take care of you! Please stay safe and healthy during the Covid-19 outbreak.
